A question from larkyfarken: What are some good irish/scottish/celtic/gaelic first names for a boy?
I want a good name that not only makes my soon-to-be son sound either smart/strong/noble, but I also want one that works with the middle name “Maverick”. So far, all we can come up with is Aiden.

Question posed by Joseph: Who is the first known person from Scottish history?

The No 1 answer:

Answer by ‘Iolaire suil na Greine
Calgacus the head of the Caledonian Confederacy that fought against the invading Roman Empire. The Caledonain Confederacy was the first unified Scottish kingdom, and the Caledonian people were originally thought to be Britons by the Romans, but they later distinguished them as Picts saying they were not Britons.

However, very little is known about Calgacus or if he even existed. The only reference to him is by the Roman Tacitus who wrote 20 years after the battle the Caledonian Tribes had against the Roman Empire. Tacitus said Calgacus gave a speech, and he proceeded to write the actual speech. The only problem is, is the speech used Roman Phrases that was not found in the language Calgacus would have spoken if he existed. So many Historians doubt Calgacus existed.

A question asked by Gavvy Wolf-Kidd: Can someone help me with my History coursework- the first war of Scottish independence?
Hi.

I’ve been allowed free reign of my history coursework, so I’m going to do the first Scottish war of independence because my grandmother’s side of the family goes right back to that period and I want to find out more about it.

Can somebody please recommend some books I could read or give me some information about it? (I need at least 10 sources, and I’ve already looked at Wikipedia, which hasn’t been the best)

Thank you!
GWK.

golf in Scotland
by orudge

Question posed by armiste_web: what is the history behind the choice of exactly 18 holes for a golf course? Why not an even 20 or 24?
I was told once that it was because in Scotland where golf originated, one of the original architects of the modern game of golf said that it took exactly 18 shots of whisky to finish off a bottle while you played. As interesting as this sounds, I’m sure there has to be a better expalaination. After about 10 shots I’d be face down in the pond along with my clubs and the cart.

Scottish courses were only several greens with multiple approaches.
Some had only three holes, played at three different approaches or pin settings.
Players tried to make the courses more uniform in different areas and eventually came up with nine, as the most common.
Some of the longer play holes were broken into two.
They played nine out, and sometimes were far from the starting point so they play nine back, approaching from the opposite direction. There was no conflict with other groups except when sharing greens.
They felt that playing eighteen instead of nine would also average out more evenly.
Some say that the flask would last through nine holes, and more affluent players carried a spare, enabling them to plat nine holes back!

A question asked by Nancy Pelosi 2016: Why is Scotland debating Gay Marriage when the UK Tories themselves agreed to legalize it soon?
If the British Parliament were to legalize same-sex marriage (and it seems to be a slam-dunk, since all the major political parties in London are for it), then wouldn’t Scotland have gay marriage by default?

The No 1 answer:

Answer by guiri
1. Because Scotland is a more Calvinistic place than England. Roman Catholics and many members of the dominant Church of Scotland are against homosexual marriage. The main immigrant religion is Islam.

2. Scotland has a different legal system from England.

3. Saint Paul’s letter to the Romans is taken as Gospel by some people in Scotland. Theirs is not a ‘pick and mix’ Christianity.

4. The Tories are a very small political party in Scotland. Has beens.

This matter is much more serious in Scotland than it appears and could even be a contributory factor in the break up of the UK.
Lack of cultural awareness could cause all Scottish religious bodies to ask their congregations to vote for independence. Roman Catholics in Scotland have used their block vote with success in the past.

The alternative could be an international arrest warrant served on the Pope for forbidding priests to carry out homosexual marriages!

We live in interesting times.

p.s regarding Scots Law. We must remember IRC v City of Glasgow Police Athletic Association.
I assume most repliers are ignorant of this important precedent.
