If Scotland voted for indepdendence, what would happen to immigrants?

BlackCup asked:

If Scotland voted for independence in a referendum, what would be the effect on immigrants living in Scotland? Would the 10% English living in Scotland suddently become illegal immigrants over night? What would be the effect on future British people wanting to move to Scotland, would they have to apply for an immigrant visa, a work permit?

Most likely, it would still be part of the EU, meaning that English people could live and work in Scotland, and vice versa.

I can’t see that the English and Scotish wouldn’t be able to work within each other’s countries, whatever happened. That would just be stupid.

I understand why some Scots want their independence, but I’m not sure it’d be financially viable for them to be independent.

If Scotland got independence, England should also get independence & Wales to, and send the thousands of Scots back to Scotland,

And please dont call us British we are English & Welsh, ( you Scots like to be called Scottish, so do the same for us )

Angel – If the people in Scotland vote for independence that’s their choice.
    It’s called democracy.
Just as the people in England could separate from the UK if they wanted to.

The London Government was all in favour of independence for countries like Latvia, Croatia, Ukraine etc. so what’s the problem if Scotland (or any other part of the UK) wants independence ?

How is independence ok for Latvia but not ok for Scotland?

You may not realise it but there are also thousands of English people living in Scotland. They moved here to get AWAY from England.

Would you like to see them sent back to England too?

What would happen is : If and when Scotland does become independent, anyone resident in Scotland at that time would become (if they wish) a Scottish citizen.
Anyone wishing to move to or from Scotland would be able to do so in exactly the same way as someone who wanted to move to or from Spain / France / Bulgaria etc.

If England decided to quit the UK tomorrow that would be ok would it?
But it’s not ok if Scotland or Wales wants to?

I can’t understand why the English get so huffy about this subject.
    It’s nothing personal. Relax.
It’s not about becoming enemies with England, or falling out with anyone.
It’s about people in Scotland having a voice in European or world affairs, rather than being spoken for by someone from the south of England.
How can an MP from Kent decide what’s best for someone in Kilmarnock ?

Instead of being enemies I think Scotland and England would actually be very good neighbours.
