Question on Travelling to Ireland and Scotland in January?
I was planning on traveling to Ireland and Scotland in January because it is off-season, and airfare and hotels are significantly cheaper. However,I was a bit concerned that some of the tourist spots may be closed because of the weather / season. Would I be able to visit all the tourist spots and enjoy myself during winter in Ireland and Scotland?

You will be able to enjoy yourself, specially if you arrange your tour well.
But a lot of smaller places will be closed, also most of the open air museums, even the big ones.
If you have a good guidebook, like the Lonely Planet series, there will be opening times for all things to do, including winter closures or short opening times.
Otherwise, most places have websites now, so check before you travel on those places that are important for you.
By traveling in winter you will have a very special experience.
In Scotland you are likely to run into snow, you even have to check that the places you want to go are no winter sport resorts and expensive for that.
As a lone traveler you will find that you are invited into the live of the locals in the pub, where in summer you will just be another nuisance.
Do not rely on hotels being open in villages, phone ahead. Often hotels also close in winter if there are few or no tourists, hostels often close till late spring.
But in the towns you will find plenty places to stay.
And if some place is very important to you, and it is not open, will that be a reason for you not to travel?
If so, check before you book.
