About 20 years ago I lived in a town called Kelso in the Scottish borders. In my travels, I one day came upon two huge “towers” standing close to eachother atop a hilly field. These were not castle towers. They were completely free-standing, and had clearly never been part of another building. They were probably built somewhere in the late 1800′s/early 1900′s. They seemed to have been left unused for some time, but were still intact. At a guess, I would say they were somewhere around 150 feet tall and identical, one being in slightly better shape than the other. They were stone-built and cylindrical, with a small (boarded-up) door at the bottom and a small, (I think) hexagonal walk-way around the top. I even rember their approximate location. If you leave Kelso from the south and head west past Roxburgh, they were somewhere close to the intersection with the A68.
If anyone can tell me what these are and a brief history, I’d be very grateful.
