Why Do People Tend to Like the Scots More Than the English?

Jess. asked:
I’m Scottish (I’m not anti-English though) and I noticed when I was on holiday in Italy when I mentioned I was Scottish, people smiled and then raved at how beautiful the country was…and then an English friend I was with mentioned her nationality and everyone stops smiling and complains about England?
When did the universal anti-Englishness start, and why?
And do you think the same?

Where were you on holiday? Most Americans like the English and the Scots. The English do have their past as an empire, so to some people they probably represent colonial oppression. The American Revolution was so long ago, I don’t think Americans have any grudge over that. They see the Brits as reliable allies and the source of good rock and roll. lol Scots are probably regarded as more romantic: Brave Heart and all that.
Craig Ferguson has a late night talk show and mocks the British nightly. It’s funny, but I doubt that he’s stirring up anger against the British.
Didn’t know it was “universal” not to like the English and “No,” I don’t think the same.
This is a funny question, but it’s also true. When all of this started I have no idea. The Scots are more “human” than the English. The English are known for wars and Territorial stuff (like the French in a way), they are just “too much” with the upper class system etc. This is how the world looks at the difference. Although, I have a lot of English friends, and I can not see this anywhere..
Also the English are known for being cheap. As tourists that is, not leaving any tips, drinking too much and making too much noise and sometimes fight….
I have never heard this happen but I am from Canada and have to specify that I am Canadian when I travel because people assume you are from the USA and are not very nice to Americans.
Because we make the best Whiskey
