★☆★☆★ Gaining Bananas ☆★☆★☆ asked:
We always go on holiday to Scotland from England to meet my cousins for the summer holidays, but my mum’s worried that we won’t be able to go on holiday until it’s fully grown, and even then it will be quite small. Would I be able to travel about 6 hours a day to get there in a car with almost no problems? (The reason it would take so long is because we always stop off at service stations every about 2 hours to get food and stretch our legs, so that would make it better, ish) And if I would have lots of problems, would I have to take her on a plane instead? And if I did would I actually be able so have her as hand baggage (and I’m also worried about her ears popping on planes) or as hold baggage? Because I know all about the restrictions for hand baggage but I also know how they treat hold baggage (not very well) and IM SO CONFUSED!!

Car travel should be fine, especially if you are stopping often to let her out to walk and ***. I would put her in a small, closed (not wire) crate, so she can’t move around too much (just enough room for her to lie down and turn around). She will probably sleep most of the time, but have a couple of chew toys in there to keep her busy when she is awake. And maybe have some treats on hand to give her to keep her calm in traffic.
We have a small dog, a Papillion, and we go to my parent’s house with him a couple times a month. It’s only a 45 minute drive, but he just sleeps in his crate for basically the whole time. I would suggest looping the back seat belt through the crates top handle to be sure the crate doesn’t slide if you stop short.
A crate like this is perfect:
Since you have some time before you leave, get the crate now, so you can start training her to like being in the crate. Put one of her blankets in it and have it with the door open in your house. Teach her to use it like another bed, and hide treats in the blankets for her to wander in to find. Soon enough she will enjoy being in there, so when you have to travel with her, she won’t be scared or feel “Trapped”. Practice with her in there with the door closed, so she gets used the that too.
Have fun!
I have a small whippet and travel regularly from Ireland to England on the ferry with her. She spends 4 hours alone in the car on the ferry with no problem.
When we are in England I travel from Holyhead to Preston then to Cumbria and then all the way down to Plymouth. The last trip I travelled nearly 2000 miles. She was absolutely fine.
As long as you stop regularly for your dog to stretch her legs and empty, she will be fine.
Remember to take a bottle of water from home as some dogs won’t drink strange water. If you have a problem getting her to drink (I sometimes do…) add a tiny bit of milk to the water – most dogs love it.
If you travel by air, she will have to go as ‘cargo’. Dogs are not allowed in the cabin of an airplane.
Have a great holiday.
