Question by surfgirlca2ny: What is your favorite place to go in Ireland and Scotland?
I have never been to Ireland or Scotland and will soon be traveling there for about 9 days. I would like to steer away from touristy things and enjoy the beautiful countryside and coastlines. What is your favorite thing to see – something I should be sure to see while there!

Any travel advice will be greatly appreciated!

Italians who have moved to Scotland are called Scots-Italian, and are classed as ethnic minorities, Italians who have moved to Argentina are called Italian-Argentines and are classed an ethnic minority, Scottish people who have moved to Ulster are classed as Scots-Irish, and are are an ethnic minority, why is is that people of Irish descent in Scotland are only classed as Scottish and not Scots-Irish like Scottish people in Ireland?

I’d like to work in Ireland and/or Scotland next summer, but I was checking out the cost for a work visa there and it’s outrageous! 2 or 500 Euro.
I worked in south Korea for 3 years and my work visa was only for a whole year there.
I’ve also had several friends that never even bothered getting an overpriced working visa and still worked all over Europe.
Is there a resource I’m not finding?

I am traveling to Scotland and Ireland in a few weeks, and would like to bring gifts from the US to my hosts in both countries. Nothing fancy or large, just little tokens of appreciation. Does anyone know some things we may have that they do not? Like when I went to France, I took peanut butter because my host had never had it before! So anything like that would be great… thanks so much!

A question from Aislinn C: Would 6000 pounds be enough for a 2 week holiday in Ireland and Scotland?
My mum and I are taking a 2 week holiday in June 2011.
We want to spend a week in Ireland and a week in Scotland.

Of course we’re not planning on staying in 5 star hotels and eating at gourmet restaurants every day but we would like to be comfortable.

I’ve done some research and accommodation seems to be fairly inexpensive. And our flights are taken care of.

I’d just like to know if 6000 pounds would be enough for those 2 weeks or even 3 weeks…

Any insight would be awesome!

Question posed by S P: Is travelling from Ireland to Scotland without a passport possible?
I am currently living in Ireland and planning on going to scotland for the summer to live and work. However, my passport has just recently gone out of date. I am applying for a new passport but that can take anywhere up to 5 weeks. That would eat into the first month I had planned to spend in Scotland.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated

Yes you can as both are part of the Common Travel Area. This means that there is no immigration control for citizens of Ireland the UK, the Chanel Isles and Isle of Man.

Do bear in mind that if you are flying, Ryanair insist on passport identification, and will not even accept an expired passport even though you could present it to Irish immigration and they would allow you into Ireland as it is sufficient proof that you are Irish!!

You will need an official form of photo ID for all airlines such as a driving licence, military ID etc.

EDIT You most definitely DO NOT Need a passport to travel by ferry from the Uk to Ireland or vice versa. COMMON TRAVEL AREA. It’s exactly the same as travelling from one county to another and anyone who tells you different does not know what they are talking about. Look at the link from the official UK immigration site. I have been doing this for years and have NEVER shown a passport EXCEPT for when I am forced, through having no other option, to travel by the disgrace that bl**dy Micheal O’fecking leary calls an airline. i.e Ryanair.
